LGV Training Courses

C1, C1+E, C, C+E.

LGV driving licence is required to drive any goods vehicles with a maximum gross weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes. Before any training can be completed you must apply for your provisional licence. To obtain this requires you to complete a medical examination by a G.P. to ascertain fitness. Upon completion, the DVLA will then issue you with your provisional licence. We can supply you with all the necessary DVLA forms if you require. Upon obtaining a provisional licence, a theory and hazard perception test pass is required before any on road training can commence. This can be booked for you if required at the chosen test centre of your choice. Classroom based courses are available to prepare you for these tests, remember, our team is here to support you throughout your training. Once a pass certificate is obtained, we will arrange your driving test with you to suit your requirements. We will book your driving test appointment with the Driving Standards Agency and arrange accommodation if required.

The Different Classes
The L.G.V qualification is currently broken up into three main categories for each class of vehicle. The appropriate provisional entitlement must be shown on the counterpart of your driving licence. A C1 provisional entitlement would not allow you to take a category C rigid LGV Test.

Class C1
Rigid goods vehicles, with an un-laden weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes, up to, a maximum authorised mass, (gross weight) of 7.5 tonnes. This group covers the large van, small delivery lorry, and small horsebox. At the age of 18 having passed your category B (car) driving test, you could complete you training for this group, having obtained your provisional LGV licence and passed your theory and hazard perception tests.

Class C
Rigid goods vehicles with an un-laden weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes, up to a maximum authorised mass, (gross weight) of 32 tonnes. Mobile cranes are also covered in this group. Provisional licence can be obtained at the age of 21 by non military personnel. Theory and hazard perception tests must be completed, unless previously passed to complete a class C1

Class C+E
A class C rigid fitted with a trailer exceeding 750 kilograms, or an articulated lorry, with a gross weight capacity of 44 tonnes. We do not train with wagon and drag, only articulated vehicles. Existing full group C licence holders are not required to complete further theory and hazard perception tests before completing training for class C+E.

The LGV Test
The practical LGV driving test for all LGV classes consists of a series of safety questions before you commence driving, an off road manoeuvring test and on road driving, following a route as directed by your examiner. The driving test is designed to test your vehicle handling skills, road awareness, safety and observance of the Highway Code. The driving test will be completed in approximately 90 minutes.

Un-coupling - and re-coupling exercise (C+E test only)
You will have to demonstrate your practical ability to safely separate the tractor unit from the semi trailer. Having separated the tractor unit, an examination of the trailer is completed before you reconnect the unit to the trailer. A safe systematic procedure must be followed to ensure future safe operations. This element may be completed during or after you complete you’re on road driving.
