Trailer Towing Training

B+E

Pembrokeshire Road Training was the first training provider in Wales to be accredited with the National Trailer and Towing Association Ltd as an approved training provider. We are proud of this achievement, our customers include Peter Bowen racing stables, where the safe transportation of high value racehorses is essential to their operations. Our system of training which includes advanced police training techniques ensures the safe, smooth transportation of their horses. We also have been retained by Zed Ten Caravans and Tenby Touring Caravans to provide their customers training in the towing and reversing of their newly purchased touring caravans. Our joint working partnership with 2:Can school of motoring also now provides their candidates access to trailer towing training provided by experienced instructors. Our off-road training area provides candidates the opportunity to receive training and practice in a safe environment.

The Car & Trailer Practical Test (B+E)

The car and trailer test (B+E) is based on the lorry driving test and can only be taken at a vocational (bus & lorry) driving centre. The practical driving test has been allotted completion time of 1hour 30 minutes. Our tests are conducted at the Haverfordwest vocational driving test centre. All our instructors are experienced LGV (Lorry) instructors, not car instructors, who have expanded their market to capture the trailer training market.

The B+E test includes vehicle and trailer related safety questions, an off-road manoeuvring exercise to include controlled forward driving, a rear left reverse placing the combination of vehicle and trailer accurately within a parking bay, followed by a controlled braking exercise.

You will not be required to carry out the following on a public road
- Emergency stop
- Reversing around a corner
- Reverse parking
- Turning in the road

The vehicle safety questions which are updated from 1st July 2008, may include opening the vehicle bonnet and identifying how to check the brake and clutch fluid, oil and engine coolant levels. The safe loading of the trailer, load restraint, tyre law, lighting equipment checks are also covered. The safety questions are completed before you commence driving the vehicle.

You will be required to demonstrate a safe, controlled drive, following the route directions as given by your examiner, comply with speed limits, negotiate roundabouts correctly, observing the highway code and maintaining progress.

Upon your return to the test centre, you will be required to demonstrate your ability to safely position, stop and park your vehicle, then uncouple your trailer, complete an examination of the trailer before re--coupling it to the towing vehicle. Having re-coupled the trailer and completing pre drive checks, your driving test will conclude, and the examiner will the inform you of your result.
